Pur Air Purifier Lets Smokers, Non-Smokers
Enjoy The Same Space
While the smoking vs. non-smoking
debate is burning hot as ever in New York and
elsewhere, Paul Fiacco and his team in Wichita,
Kan., are busy supplying their Pur Air air purifier
to bar and restaurant owners -- and anyone who
wants cleaner indoor air -- across the country.
The simple, economical, efficient Pur Air turns
an ordinary ceiling fan into an air purifier
and circulator. It lets smokers and non-smokers
comfortably share the same space, provides employees
with cleaner work environments, and helps allergy
sufferers breathe easier.
"The Pur Air started as a way for me to
be able to smoke in the house," jokes Fiacco,
a native New Yorker, now living in Wichita,
Kan. He invented the Pur Air in 1997 while recovering
from an auto accident and unable to follow the
"house rule" of smoking only outside.
Fiacco has degrees in geophysics and secondary
education and owned several hydrocarbon exploration
and pipeline construction companies.
"I soon realized that my invention could
be a fantastic way to clean the air overall
from other pollutants," Fiacco says.
Independent tests proved he was right. The Pur Air,
with its unique design and combination of carbon
and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters,
is extremely effective in reducing the amounts
of nicotine and other harmful particles from
tobacco smoke. Dust, bacteria, mold spores,
and industrial pollutants, such as paints and
fumes, are greatly reduced as well.
"All I know is that my restaurant no longer
smells like smoke," says Wade Hayes, a
Pur Air customer and owner of Toot's Great Food
and Family Fun, a popular family restaurant
in Murfreesboro, Tenn. "My customers have
told me they appreciated the difference."
Because the system attaches to a ceiling fan,
it has many advantages over portable, floor
model air purifiers. The Pur Air:
- Circulates a tremendous amount of air. For
example, the air in a 20-by-20 foot room is
circulated through its three-stage filters every
90 seconds, or 40 times an hour.
- Uses no more electricity than a ceiling fan.
- Doesn't take up valuable floor space.
One school district in western Kansas turned
to the Pur Air system as an economical way to
improve air quality problem in an elementary
school. The school had seen abnormally high
absentee rates and health complaints. In one
classroom alone, it was discovered, the mold
spore count was 2.5 times the mold found outside.
After a Pur Air was installed, the count plummeted
to just over a tenth of the mold found outside.
Pur Air is manufactured by Heartland Technologies
Inc. and distributed by Pur Air Inc. Pur Air
is a wholly owned subsidiary of Heartland Technologies.
The company focuses on products that improve
the quality of life in the workplace and at
home.
